FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) registration offers several benefits to food businesses operating in India. Here are some of the key advantages of obtaining FSSAI registration:
FSSAI registration is mandatory for all food businesses in India, as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Registering with FSSAI ensures that your business complies with the legal requirements related to food safety and hygiene.
FSSAI registration signifies that your food products or services meet the government's standards for safety and quality. This can help build trust among consumers, as they are more likely to purchase products that are FSSAI certified.
Many retailers and distributors prefer to work with FSSAI-registered businesses as it assures the quality and safety of food products. Having an FSSAI registration can make it easier to enter new markets and attract potential business partners.
FSSAI sets standards for the quality and safety of food products. Registration involves regular inspections and audits, which can help ensure that your business maintains high-quality standards and follows best practices in food safety.
FSSAI regulates your business and contributes to the overall safety of consumers. This is particularly important in the food industry, where contaminated or substandard products can have serious health complications.
FSSAI-registered businesses may have access to various government schemes and subsidies aimed at promoting food safety and quality. These incentives can help reduce operating costs and promote growth.
FSSAI registration can enhance your brand's reputation. It demonstrates your commitment to food safety and quality, which can attract more customers and help you establish a strong brand image.
If you plan to export food products, FSSAI registration is often a prerequisite. Many international buyers require proof of compliance with food safety standards, and an FSSAI certificate can simplify the export process.
Non-compliance with FSSAI regulations can lead to penalties, fines, or even business closure. FSSAI registration helps you avoid legal issues and financial consequences associated with non-compliance.
With increasing awareness about food safety among consumers, many individuals actively seek products with FSSAI certification. Having this certification can help you tap into this growing market segment.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) offers different types of licenses/registrations based on the scale and nature of the food business. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, here are the three primary types of FSSAI licenses/registrations.
This is required for small food businesses with an annual turnover of up to Rs.12 lakhs. Basic registration is suitable for small-scale manufacturers, distributors, and food retailers. The basic registration is granted by the local food safety authority.
Businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs.12 lakhs but less than Rs.20crores are required to obtain an FSSAI State License. This category covers medium-sized food businesses and manufacturers that operate within a specific state. State licenses are issued by the State Food Safety Department.
Large food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs.20crore, or those involved in import and export of food products, are required to obtain an FSSAI Central License. This category is for businesses that operate across multiple states or at a national level. Central licenses are issued by the Central Licensing Authority, which is the FSSAI headquarters in New Delhi.
